Lennart Chytraeus (born 1952) is a Swedish ceramicist and glass artist whose career has been marked by profound craftsmanship and a constant exploration of the possibilities of materials. With a background as assistant to the legendary Bertil Vallien for many years, Chytraeus has developed a unique voice in glass art, combining his ceramic background with the fluid and light-creating properties of glass.
Since establishing his own series production at Orranäs Glasbruk in Orrefors, Chytraeus has created a number of iconic works that invite the viewer to reflect. His design language is rhythmic and figurative, often charged with symbolism and philosophical undertones. The series *Livets Hjul* (The Wheel of Life) depicts the cyclical nature of existence through dynamic, rotating forms that capture movement and time in the transparency of glass. The elegant *Grail* works, with their stylized cups and bowls, weave together mythology, spirituality, and aesthetics into a harmonious whole.
Chytraeus boldly experiments with the surface and form of glass—from sandblasting and etching to organic, flowing lines—creating objects that are not only visually striking but also narrative. Each work bears traces of the artist’s hand and mind, bridging traditional craftsmanship and modern artistic vision. His production at Orranäs Glasbruk represents a living part of the Swedish glass tradition, where function meets poetry and the material itself becomes part of the narrative. Chytraeus’ art invites quiet contemplation, where light, form, and symbolism interact in a timeless dialogue with the viewer.
